Gorge. | |
The Manambolo Gorge runs along the southern edge of the Tsingy de
Bemaraha with it's northen banks being part of the World Heritage Site
itself. It is a place of great mystery and sacredness to the Malagasy.
They believe their ancestors still roam this area and there is evidence
that the original inhabitants of the highlands of Madagascar, the
Vazimba, fled to this area when the Merina arived. Very
little study has been done on the wildlife of either this area or the
Tsingy so it is important that it's future protection is assured. The
gorge itself is a wonderful peaceful place with spectacular cliffs
covered in trees growing at crazy angles. The river in the dry season
can only be 30cm deep so my fear of drowing was lessened until I
recalled that you can drown in 15cm of water! You can usually hire
guides at Bekopaka who will bring you on a trip down the gorge but it
is advisable to organise all this through one of the Tana based travel
agents to make sure someone is actually there to meet you. There are a
number of restrictions in place as to your behaviour when you travel
down the gorge so please pay attention to the guides instructions and
follow them carefully. It all adds to what will be a wonderful
experiemce anyway.
